KRISTOFFERSSON WINS WORLD RX SEASON-OPENER IN PORTUGAL

Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson has won this weekend’s Bompiso Rallycross of Portugal, round one of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy, after a dominant display in his Volkswagen Team Sweden Polo RX Supercar.  Reigning World RX Champion Petter Solberg clinched the runners-up spot and Timmy Hansen finished third for Team Peugeot-Hansen.

Kristoffersson – an accomplished racing driver having won the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) and Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia – lined up on the front row along Solberg for today’s six-car final. Joining Solberg, Kristoffersson and Hansen on the grid was Andreas Bakkerud (Ford Olsbergs MSE), Davy Jeanney (Team Peugeot-Hansen) and PG Andersson (Marklund Motorsport). Kristoffersson was quickest off the line and was awarded with the first Monster Energy Super Charge Award of the year.

“I am so, so happy,” beamed Kristoffersson, who also wins a Rebellion Timepieces Wraith Rallycross limited edition watch for his win in Portugal this weekend. “I nearly stalled the engine on the start line and the whole circuit was unbelievably slippery but I drove a clean race. I couldn’t see out of the side windows so it was more about survival than actual racing.  I want to say a big, big thank you to Volkswagen Sweden and to my entire team who have done a fantastic job over the past few months. They have worked very hard to build this car which has been working well all weekend.  It’s the best possible start to the season.”

Second placed Solberg, who won last year’s race in Portugal, added: “It is very important to have a good first race - consistency is as important as winning races in rallycross. I’ve not been feeling well this weekend and then I lost my gear lever in the final so it certainly wasn’t easy but I’m happy with second. Johan [Kristoffersson] has done a very good job this weekend.”

Team Peugeot-Hansen got its 2015 season off to a promising start after team-mates Timmy Hansen and Davy Jeanney finished third and fourth respectively.  “The final was like driving on soap, there was no grip and then I lost my power steering – my arms are so tired now,” explained 22-year-old Hansen.  “I’m really happy with the car, it’s very quick but it’s new so we need to make some small changes before our next race.  Overall, it’s been a great start to the year and I’m really happy that both myself and Davy got to the final.”

Andreas Bakkerud rounded off the top five in Portugal after a solid display in his Olsbergs MSE prepared Ford Fiesta. The Norwegian was leading overnight but was knocked out of podium contention after contact with Sweden’s PG Andersson during the final.

Two-time DTM Champion and EKS team owner Mattias Ekstrom finished seventh overall in Portugal, while last year’s World RX runner-up Topi Heikkinen was eighth after a consistent weekend of driving in the Marklund Motorsport prepared Polo. Russia’s Timur Timerzyanov and Austria’s Manfred Stohl finished ninth and tenth respectively.

Krisztian Szabo, a former European Autocross Champion, took the first Super1600 victory of the season at the wheel of his Skoda Fabia. Frenchman Andrea Dubourg secured the runners-up spot while Latvia’s Janis Baumanis took third.

2014 RX Lites Champion Kevin Eriksson picked up where he left off last season with four heat wins and a victory in the all-important final.  Kevin Hansen – younger brother of Timmy - finished second after an impressive weekend of driving, while Joachim Hvaal took the third podium spot. Former European Rally Champion Krzysztof Holowczyc finished fifth on his rallycross debut.

Martin Anayi, World RX Managing Director for IMG, commented: “We’ve witnessed some sensational driving in Portugal this weekend and the performance displayed by our younger drivers in such tricky driving conditions is particularly impressive. Kristoffersson joins us as a permanent World Championship driver for the first time this year and the fact that he can win on his debut with Volkswagen Team Sweden is testament to the high standard of drivers that we have competing in World RX.  It’s excellent to see three manufacturers – Volkswagen, Citroen and Peugeot – finish on the podium and the development on the cars over the winter hiatus has been very impressive.  It’s always a pleasure coming to Montalegre – the Portuguese fans are extremely passionate and still flocked in their thousands despite the rain.  With four races in five weeks, the teams have got little restbite now as we head straight to Hockenheim for our first ever event alongside the highly-acclaimed DTM series.”

(http://www.diariomotor.com/competicion/imagenes/picscache/1440x655c/mundial-rallycross-cinco-fabricantes-2017_1440x655c.jpg)

SOLBERG WINS INAUGURAL HOCKENHEIM RX

Norway’s Petter Solberg took a lights-to-flag victory at the first ever World RX of Hockenheim, round two of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy, which was attended by over 75,000 people this weekend. Ford Olsbergs MSE driver Reinis Nitiss took the runners-up spot and Team Peugeot-Hansen’s Timmy Hansen finished third.

Joining the highly-acclaimed DTM series, World RX made its debut at the iconic F1 venue this weekend as a purpose-built rallycross circuit was constructed inside the famous Sachs Arena.  SDRX had a strong weekend as Britain’s Liam Doran led after heat two, while Solberg went on to win heats three and four, the semi-final and the all-important final.  He now leads the overall World RX Drivers’ Championship by 15 points. SDRX lead Ford Olsbergs MSE in the Teams’ Championship by three points and have a total of 74 points. Peugeot-Hansen lie third with 65 points.

“I love big fights and tough competitions and that’s why I love rallycross,” confirmed Solberg who received a standing ovation alongside his fellow World RX finalists as the DTM fans showed their appreciation for the FIA’s newest World Championship.  He was also awarded the Monster Energy Super Charge Award for his rapid start off the line and a Rebellion Timepieces Wraith Drive Rallycross watch for his win this weekend.

Solberg continued: “The fans seemed to love rallycross and it’s been great to be in Hockenheim alongside DTM this weekend, it’s been very well organised.  It’s not been an easy weekend:  we had a bad start on Friday, there was little grip off the line and then I had a puncture in the semi-final.  I had two choices going into Saturday: one was to go fast or the second was to go very fast – I went for the second option! I know everybody says this but my win is credit to the team.  They are fantastic and I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Runner-up Nitiss was a model of consistency this weekend as the 19-year-old posted a series of top five times during the heats and was placed second at the Intermediate Classification.  “I am very happy, we are getting closer and closer to Petter all the time, but I guess that he has been in cars for longer than I have been alive,” joked the 19-year-old Latvian.

Team Peugeot-Hansen continued its podium-winning streak as team-mate Timmy Hansen finished third in the Peugeot 208 WRX supercar. The 22-year-old Swede qualified 12th after the Intermediate Classification and despite starting on the back grid for his semi and the final, the driver showed tremendous pace to earn a podium spot.  Hansen took up the story: “I was feeling lost at the end of yesterday as something didn’t feel right but my family and team kept me going.  Today I woke up and felt different – we found a very good strategy and the start was unbelievable. I really pushed behind the wheel and it paid off. I’m feeling very emotional.”

Joining Solberg, Nitiss and Hansen in today’s final was Marklund Motorsport’s Topi Heikkinen, last year’s FIA European Rallycross Champion Robin Larsson and Ford Olsbergs MSE driver Andreas Bakkerud.  Larsson got off to a promising start but dropped behind Hansen after taking the Joker on the final lap and making contact with Hansen and Heikkinen.  He failed to finish while Heikkinen went on to take fourth place.  Bakkerud retired on lap three after the Norwegian broke his car’s front suspension.

It was a difficult weekend for EKS as GT racer Edward Sandstrom narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot after qualifying 13th. After being disqualified from heat two, team-mate Anton Marklund was unable to make up for lost time and qualified 20th at Intermediate Classification. The weekend didn’t end so badly for EKS team boss Mattias Ekstrom, however, as the talented Swede took a DTM race win.

Elsewhere, JRM Racing team boss James Rumsey declared he was pleased with the British team’s World RX debut with a pair of MINI RX Supercars driven by Americans, Danny Way and Dave Mirra.  Rumsey explained: “Considering this is our first-ever World RX event, I think we can be proud of how the car and drivers performed and the pace that we showed out of the box. We’re not concerned that we just missed on out the semi-finals. The prize for us was gathering lots of valuable data that we can take back to the JRM factory and use to good effect in our World RX development programme.”

World RX Managing Director for IMG, Martin Anayi, concluded: “It’s been an honour to join DTM at their season-opening race at Hockenheim this weekend where our drivers did a fantastic job of showcasing the exciting bumper-to-bumper race action we so frequently see in rallycross. The sound of our 600bhp Supercars inside the Sachs Arena was incredible and the cheers from the stadium showed just how much the crowds were enjoying the action. After dominating the final, Petter thoroughly deserves his win and it’s great to see three marques – Citroen, Ford and Peugeot - on the podium thanks to Reinis and Timmy’s sterling efforts.  On behalf of WME|IMG, I’d like to thank ITR for their warm welcome this weekend and we look forward to developing our multi-year partnership in the years to follow.”

After two back-to-back events, the World RX crews will now have a short break before they prepare for round three at Mettet in Belgium from 23-24 May.  The Belgian RX round will also formed the opening round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship and will see a total of 39 Supercars take part.

HEIKKINEN WINS IN BELGIUM
Marklund Motorsport’s Topi Heikkinen has won this weekend’s Ladbrokes World RX of Belgium, round three of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy. SDRX driver Petter Solberg finished second to establish a 22 point Championship lead in the overall drivers’ standings over Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson. Ford Olsbergs MSE’s Reinis Nitiss claimed the third podium spot.

In the opening round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship (Euro RX), Frenchman Jerome Grosset-Janin took the overall victory in his Albatec Racing prepared Peugeot 208 RX Supercar. He was followed home by 18-year-old Ole Christian Veiby who showed remarkable pace on his debut with Volkswagen Team Sweden. Hungarian Tamas Karai finished third.

“I’m really happy, Belgium is starting to feel like home!,” grinned Heikkinen who repeated his 2014 Mettet victory. The Finn was awarded the coveted Monster Energy Super Charge Award after his rapid start off the line during the final, and also wins a Rebellion Timepieces Wraith Drive Rallycross watch from the Championship’s official timing partner.

Heikkinen added: “I’m feeling really comfortable in the car now – it suits my driving style but I have to say that I am not alone.  There is a team of more than 20 people who helped me to win today, my team are amazing and I couldn’t have done this without them.  The fight for the Championship is well and truly on and now we get ready for Lydden Hill next week and hope to repeat this all over again.”

Runner-up Solberg astonished the Belgian crowds when he was penalised with a Double Joker penalty after jump starting his Citroen DS3 Supercar in semi-final one. The disadvantage didn’t hinder the reigning Champion, however, as Solberg drove flat out to finish just half a second behind Sweden’s PG Andersson.

Solberg took up the story: “I took a gamble in the semi-final but it didn’t work out.  After that, I had to really push to make up for the time I was going to lose from taking two Jokers.  All I could think about was going as fast as I could.  Then in the final, the plan was to aim for second but when my spotter told me I was only a second behind Topi, I tried to catch him but went into the Joker too fast. Last time we were here, we finished third, this time we came second - maybe next year we can win!”

Third placed Nitiss was quick to thank his fans who had travelled from Latvia to support him weekend but remained his own harshest critic. “Of course it’s good to be third for the second event in a row but I need to improve my driving,” said the 19-year-old.  “The car feels really good but my times weren’t as good in the semis or the final so I want to work on that.”

After a strong performance in a second Ford Olsbergs MSE car, Nitiss’ team-mate Andreas Bakkerud finished today’s event fourth overall.  Fifth place was awarded to Sweden’s PG Andersson who lined up on the front row of today’s final alongside team-mate Heikkinen.

Elsewhere, it was a tough end to the weekend for round one winner Johan Kristoffersson who was top qualifier at the Intermediate Classification after winning heats three and four.   The Volkswagen Team Sweden driver was set to win his semi-final until Kristoffersson lost his lead when he clipped a kerb with his Polo RX Supercar and dropped to fifth after incurring a puncture.  It was a similar story for Team Peugeot-Hansen’s Timmy Hansen who lost out on a spot in the final due to a front-left puncture.

EKS team-mates Mattias Ekstrom and Anton Marklund had a strong weekend with Marklund reaching the semis but narrowly missing out on a spot in the final after finishing fourth.  Ekstrom lined up on the third row of today’s final alongside Solberg but retired after he incurred damage to his Audi S1 EKS Quattro on lap one.

Fredrik Magnussen won this weekend’s TouringCar category, the Norwegian making an incredible comeback after rolling his Ford Fiesta on day one. Anders Braten and David Nordgard finished second and third respectively.

A win for Janis Baumanis in the S1600 category sees the Latvian lead the standings after two rounds.  Second place was awarded to Russia’s Nikita Misyulya while Frenchman Andrea Dubourg secured the third podium spot.

Solberg gana en Lydden (UK)

Petter Solberg has won the Motorsport News World RX of Great Britain, round four of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy, and extends his lead in the overall Drivers’ Standings over Johan Kristoffersson to 29 points. Mattias Ekstrom finished second, a mere 0.4 seconds behind Solberg to take the runner-up spot. Volkswagen Team Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson rounded off the top three.

Ticket sales for this year’s British RX event increased by 20% compared to 2014 as fans descended in their thousands to the Lydden Hill race circuit in Kent to watch 29 Supercars, 18 TouringCars and 12 RX Lites battle it out over two full days of racing. Solberg won the first two heats while Britain’s Andrew Jordan, who was driving as a wildcard entry for Team Peugeot-Hansen this weekend, posted the fastest time during heat three. Heat four was won by Ekstrom at the wheel of his Audi S1 EKS RX Quattro.

“It’s been a fantastic weekend: good weather, a lot of people, a fantastic atmosphere and some really close racing,” grinned race winner Solberg, who also wins a Rebellion Timepieces Wraith Drive Rallycross watch plus the coveted Monster Energy Super Charge Award for being quickest off the line during the final. “We had some issues with the car’s engine this morning but everything was working well for the semis and then I just pushed really hard in the final.  I pushed so hard that I even got a puncture on the last corner, I was driving at my limit! A lot of my mechanics are English, which makes this win at Lydden even more special – not just for me, but for the whole team.”

Runner-up Ekstrom added: “I had really good pace all weekend and was just a car length from beating Petter in the final.  It was close racing, that’s for sure, but that’s what rallycross is about – sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.”

Third-placed Kristoffersson had cause for a double celebration after becoming a father for the first time this morning. “It’s certainly been an emotional day,” explained the 21-year-old, “but back to the racing, I really didn’t expect to be here today. We were P13 in free practice yesterday because I just couldn’t find the pace.  I adjusted my driving style for today and then had a good start in the final but Petter was just so quick! We had a really nice fight but I have to say P3 is fantastic for the Championship so I’m really happy.”

Last year’s Lydden Hill winner Andreas Bakkerud finished fourth this time round. The Ford Olsbergs MSE driver struggled in yesterday’s heats but returned to form today after setting two top three heat times and finishing second in semi-final two.  The Norwegian lined up alongside Kristofferson on row two of today’s final and went on to finish 1.3 seconds ahead of his OMSE team-mate, Reinis Nitiss.

Arguably the most impressive drive of the weekend, however, was that of Guy Wilks who reached the final on his debut in World RX.  Wilks, who was piloting a striking yellow-liveried MINI RX Supercar prepared by British team JRM Racing, had only tested the car once before racing against the world’s best rallycross drivers. “My aim was a spot in the semis but to have made the finals is amazing and so much more than I expected,” explained the 34-year-old Englishman. “I got a front-left puncture coming over the jump at the end of the Joker and I knew it was over for us then but as I said I’m really happy to have got this far.”

Elsewhere, it was a difficult day for Marklund Motorsport as PG Andersson, Topi Heikkinen and Tanner Foust who all suffered problems and failed to make it into the final 12. Timur Timerzyanov spun in heat three and missed a semi-final spot as did Liam Doran, who had a good race with SDRX team-mate Petter Solberg in heat four.

In the highly competitive RX Lites, which saw a total of 12 entries this weekend, it was an extremely close battle between round one winner Kevin Eriksson and rising star, Kevin Hansen.  A final lap tussle saw Hansen take the win over Eriksson by just 0.8 seconds. Thomas Bryntesson – who was leading the RX Lites going into day two – took the third podium spot.

Sweden’s Fredrik Salsten won the second round of TouringCar after finishing three seconds ahead of Ben-Philip Gunderson. Female driver Camilla Antonsen rounded off the top three after an impressive drive in her Fiesta. Last year’s TouringCar Champion Daniel Lundh was fourth, while 16-year-old lady driver Magda Andersson rounded off the top five.

Martin Anayi, World RX Managing Director for IMG, said: “It’s been a frantic start to the 2015 season with four races in five weeks but Lydden Hill has helped to deliver an outstanding weekend of race action.  It’s extremely encouraging to hear that ticket sales have increased by 20% and just goes to show how much momentum the sport has gathered over the past 12 months.  It was excellent to witness two British drivers – Guy Wilks and Andrew Jordan – reach today’s semi-finals and Guy did a superb job to make the final six despite having only tested the car once before. There were five different manufacturers in the final – Citroen, Peugeot, Ford, Audi and MINI – which proves just how competitive our Championship has become.  Petter and Mattias put on a fantastic show for the fans during the final from start to finish as they battled right until the very last corner.  Andreas’ and Reinis’ results moves the Ford Olsbergs MSE squad six points ahead of SDRX in the Teams’ Championship and with nine rounds still remaining, both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships remain wide open.  It’s been a brilliant start to the year but now the teams will have some well-earned rest before we resume both the World RX and Euro RX Championship in Germany next month.”

Round five of the FIA World Rallycross Championship will take place at Estering in Germany next month (19-21 June).  It will also form round two of the FIA European Rallycross Championship (Euro RX).

DOUBLE HEAT WIN FOR THE FRENCHMAN DAVY JEANNEY AT GERMANY RX

Team Peugeot-Hansen’s Davy Jeanney is leading the ALL-INKL.COM World RX of Germany, round five of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy, after the Frenchman stormed his way to two heat victories at the wheel of his Peugeot 208 RX Supercar.

Ford Olsbergs MSE driver Reinis Nitiss is second after two top-three heat times, while Volkswagen Sweden’s Tord Linnerud rounds off the top three. Reigning World RX Champion Petter Solberg was quickest in free practice and is fifth overall.

Out of the total 35 Supercars that started in Germany, Tommy Rustad was fourth quickest and topped the table out of the 18 Supercar drivers eligible to score points in the FIA European Rallycross Championship (Euro RX). Jean-Baptiste Dubourg is second in Euro RX, while Frode Holte is third in his Hyundai i20.  Volkswagen Sweden’s Ole Christian Veiby and Albatec Racing’s Jerome Grosset-Janin are fourth and fifth in Euro RX respectively.

Jeanney took his first heat win of 2015, and followed it up with a second shortly after.  “I’m very happy to be fastest in both heats today and I’m feeling more confident in the car,” declared Jeanney, who finished runner-up in European Rallycross in 2013. “I had a very good start in the first heat and then lap after lap, my times kept improving.  The second heat was a big race with the likes of Timmy [Hansen] and Johan [Kristofferson] beside me but I had another good start and the car was perfect.”

Linnerud didn’t have the best start to his weekend when he rolled his Volkswagen Polo but ended the day in third place. The Norwegian summarised his day: “I braked too late in free practice which meant I had to take a different line on the circuit where the grip wasn’t so good. I hit the sand and rolled the car onto its roof.  The team repaired the car before the first heat and I was sixth.  I didn’t have the best start for the second heat but there was a lot of action at the first corner and I managed to come out ahead.  I didn’t take too many risks after that but tomorrow I can push a bit harder and maybe I can be faster.”

Last year’s German RX runner-up and EKS team owner Mattias Ekstrom had a dramatic day.  The two-time DTM Champion explained: “A lot of things went wrong today, it’s not been good.  Firstly, we had some problems during free practice and changed the engine before the heats.  In heat one I had a broken throttle cable and had to retire, then in the next heat we had a sensor problem.

It’s been an unlucky day, for sure, but we will come back tomorrow and see what we can do.”

Round one winner Johan Kristoffersson was second quickest in heat one and was on course for a top-three time in heat two before the Swede clipped the entrance of the Joker Lap, which cost him valuable seconds.  He ends today seventh overall.

The support categories at the fifth round of World RX have completed three heats today, where Philip Gehrman and Ernestas Staponkus lead the TouringCar and Super1600 categories respectively.

Ford Fiesta driver Gehrman was thirteenth fastest in the first TouringCar heat, but fought back in the second and third runs – a pair of fastest times elevating him to the top of the overnight standings.  Staponkus was fastest in heat two in Super1600, while Russian driver Timur Shigabutdinov had a consistent day and was second fastest twice to be second overall. Dane Ulrik Linnemann is third after setting the fastest time in heat three.

Tomorrow’s action begins at 8.30am (local time) with warm-up for all classes.  Heats three and four will run from 10am, while the S1600, TouringCar and Supercar semi-finals/finals are scheduled from 2pm.

EKSTRÖM GANA EN CASA FRENTE A UN RECORD DE ASISTENCIA
EKSTRÖM WINS HOME WORLD RX EVENT IN FRONT OF RECORD CROWD
Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom has become the fifth different winner in this year’s FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy after clinching the victory at the Volkswagen World RX of Sweden in an exhilarating final race. Timmy Hansen was declared the initial winner but his victory was later revoked after a stewards’ enquiry confirmed the Swede was penalised for pushing in the final.  As a consequence, Hansen was demoted to second while Ford Olsbergs MSE driver Andreas Bakkerud finished third.

Over 40,000 people attended this year’s Swedish RX round – up from 35,000 in 2014 – where reigning World RX Champion Petter Solberg was top qualifier at the Intermediate Classification. The final didn’t fare so well for Solberg, however, as the Norwegian beached his Citroen DS3 in the gravel on the final lap and broke his steering. Despite the setback, Solberg continues to lead the overall drivers’ standings, 44 points ahead of Johan Kristoffersson.

“I’m happy for my guys and for myself, I feel this is a well deserved win,” confirmed Ekstrom, who has won at Holjes for the second year in a row.  “I have no hard feelings towards Timmy, he deserves P2.  He made a brave move passing me on the corner but everybody has to play by the rules of a World Championship.  I did feel like I was robbed of the win so I’m pleased that the stewards made the decision that they did – it sets the level of the bar of how we should race. I’m really pleased with how car the car has performed and of course it’s always amazing to take a win at my home race.”

Hansen was understandably disappointed following the stewards’ decision but the Team Peugeot-Hansen driver remained positive. “It was a very close call,” explained the 22 year-old whose team-mate Davy Jeanney finished eighth in the team’s second car.  “I saw a gap on the final corner after the jump, I didn’t hesitate and I just went for it.  I didn’t think I was pushing Mattias, there was some contact side by side but that is rallycross in my opinion.  I still feel like I won in front of my home crowd and I crossed the finish line first which was a dream feeling.”

Third-placed Bakkerud claimed his first podium of the year, despite having reached the final of each World RX race so far this season.  “It’s been a while since I’ve finished on the podium so this feels really great,” grinned Bakkerud who had a huge support network in Holjes this weekend with dozens of fans cheering on the popular Norwegian.

Bakkerud continued: “This is my third podium in Holjes and it always feels good to finish in the top three in Holjes – especially with so many family and friends who are here with me this weekend.  The car was down on power in the final but my spotter on the radio just told me to keep pushing so that’s what I did! I’m even hungrier for a victory now and that’s what I’ll be aiming for in Canada and in the second half of the year.”

Fourth place was taken by Marklund Motorsport’s Topi Heikkinen after the Finn drove a mature race to finish just shy of a podium spot.  Latvian Reinis Nitiss rounded off the top five, scoring crucial points for the Ford Olsbergs MSE squad who has now extended its lead at the top of the Teams’ Championship by 17 points over Team Peugeot-Hansen.

Elsewhere, it was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Team Volkswagen Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson and Tord Linnerud.  Kristoffersson qualified for the semi-finals but ran wide in the Joker Lap during the first lap, which led to a puncture and denied the Swede a spot in the final. During the same race, Ole Christian Veiby showed good pace in a second VW Sweden run Polo.  The Euro RX front-runner finished the event in ninth position, one spot ahead of Eric Faren who had an impressive outing for the Hansen Development Team.

Britain’s leading rallycross driver Liam Doran, who partners Solberg in the SDRX team, was placed 11th after heat three but a misfiring engine hindered his progress.

In the support categories, Latvia’s Janis Baumanis has extended his lead over Hungary’s Krisztian Szabo in the S1600 category after taking the win in Holjes.  Russia’s Nikita Misyulya and Norway’s Magnus Bergsjobrende finished second and third respectively.

Speaking about his win, Baumanis stated: “It is the best feeling to win in Holjes - the atmosphere is amazing. Myself and Reinis have had so many Latvian fans come to Holjes to support us both so I’d like to thank every single of them, my family and sponsors – it means so much to me.”

Fredrik Salsten took the win in TouringCar and now leads the rear-wheel drive category with just one round remaining. He is 17 points ahead of Sweden’s Magda Andersson who finished third in front of an elated home crowd. Fredrik Magnussen took the runners-up spot.

In the supporting RX Lites Cup, it was Thomas Bryntesson who took the victory in only his second outing in the Lites this year. He finished one second ahead of Kevin Hansen, while Kevin Eriksson clinched third.

Martin Anayi, World RX Managing Director for IMG, concluded: “We’ve had a record crowd in Sweden this weekend with over 40,000 passionate rallycross fans and it’s been wonderful to see a Swedish one-two in the final. Once again we saw a great battle between the different car manufacturers with both man and machine pushing themselves to the limit. With the record crowds combined with mainstream media who visited this weekend, the sport of rallycross is clearly going from strength to strength in Sweden.  It’s fantastic to see such a surge of popularity in rallycross since we’ve become an FIA sanctioned World Championship.”

The World RX crews will now have a five-week break before they prepare to cross the Atlantic for World RX of Canada (7-8 August).

(http://farm1.staticflickr.com/392/19807818259_d57206e0b9_b.jpg) (http://flic.kr/p/wbmfgV)IMG_20150725_135146 (http://flic.kr/p/wbmfgV) by Daniel Gonzalez Aguilera (http://www.flickr.com/photos/red5isalive/), en Flickr

DOUBLE VICTORY FOR TEAM PEUGEOT-HANSEN AS TIMMY TRIUMPHS
It was a dream weekend for Team Peugeot-Hansen as team-mates Timmy Hansen and Davy Jeanney secured a one-two at the NAF World RX of Norway, round eight of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy.  Hansen’s emphatic win is the fourth podium in a row for the Swedish-based squad and has pushed Peugeot-Hansen to the top of the Teams’ Championship.  Third place was taken by independent driver Robin Larsson in his Larsson Jernberg Racing Audi A1 Supercar.

Running alongside World RX this weekend was the third round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship (Euro RX), where home favourite Tommy Rustad took the victory in his Marklund Motorsport run VW Polo RX Supercar.  Joni-Pekka Rajala finished runner-up in a Per Eklund Motorsport run Saab 9-3, with Latvia’s Janis Baumanis third in a Peugeot 208.  Albatec Racing’s Jerome Grosset-Janin was fourth and drops behind Rustad in the overall Euro RX standings with two rounds remaining (Barcelona and Italy). Meanwhile, Sweden’s Fredrik Salsten was crowned the 2015 TouringCar Champion.

“Finally I have another win! I’ve been wanting this for a long time,” beamed Hell RX winner Timmy Hansen who was also awarded with a limited edition Rebellion Timepieces Wraith Drive Rallycross watch.  “The car has been flying all weekend and I am really, really enjoying driving the 208 at the moment.  We played safe tactics throughout the heats and had a good tyre strategy going into the semis - the team has been very supportive once again.  We are just getting better each weekend and now I can’t wait for Loheac because it is one of my favourite circuits and is of course home for both Peugeot and Davy.”

Fellow podium finisher Larsson was just as delighted as Hansen to be on the podium.  “For two years I have had nothing but bad luck in Hell so it’s great to finish third. I’ve been struggling this season, the two previous races in Canada and Sweden were a nightmare for me.  This weekend we were consistent in the heats and kept everything clean.  We were on the last row for the semi-final and I didn’t have much to lose so I just pushed and kept everything tidy.  I can’t thank my team enough – they have worked so hard and they deserve this,” he said.

ALL-INKL.COM Muennich Motorsport’s Alx Danielsson had his best result of the year so far in fourth place. “When I went to the first round in Portugal, I hadn’t driven a rallycross car ever, and I hadn’t been to a rallycross track ever. I had only watched it on TV - I was very new to it. It took some getting used to of course and we’ve been developing the car. The pace this weekend has been really good, this is a big day for me.”

Rounding out the top five was former WRC driver PG Andersson at the wheel of his Marklund Motorsport run Polo RX Supercar.  Despite not finishing on the podium due to a front-left puncture, the Swede took comfort after being rewarded with the Monster Energy Super Charge Award for leading the pack to turn one.

Russia’s Timur Timerzyanov had a dramatic day and rolled his Olsbergs MSE prepared Ford Fiesta during the semi-finals but managed to recover and finish third and to secure a spot in the final.  The team worked frantically and managed to get the car to the grid for the final, but Timerzyanov was forced to retire on the second lap.

Reigning World RX Champion Petter Solberg, Ford Olsbergs MSE’s Andreas Bakkerud and Reinis Nitiss plus EKS team-mates Anton Marklund and Mattias Ekstrom made it through to the semi-finals but all five failed to make the final.  Bakkerud made contact with Solberg in the second semi-final and was forced to retire when the front wheel came clean off his car in the penultimate lap. Solberg and Bakkerud finished seventh and 11th respectively.

Meanwhile, a front-left puncture for EKS driver Ekstrom slowed the Sweden RX winner during the same race and left him classified 12th overall. Team-mate Anton Marklund was close to reaching his first ever final with the team but a small mistake cost the Swede crucial time. He finished the event in eighth place.

Team Volkswagen Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson qualified 12th at the Intermediate Classification stage but failed to start his semi-final after the team were unable to get his car ready on time.   Team-mate Tord Linnerud finished 15th overall.

Supporting the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Hell this weekend was the final round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship for TouringCar and the fourth round of the RX Lites Cup. Christian Sandmo took the Hell RX TouringCar win but it was Sweden’s Fredrik Salsten who was crowned the overall TouringCar Champion after a dominant season in his Citroen DS3.  “I’m so happy,” grinned Salsten.  “I want to thank my whole team and family – without their support none of this would be possible.  Now my aim is to go into a Supercar but it depends on budget. I hope to have a surprise for everyone soon… so watch this space!”

In the supporting RX Lites Cup Thomas Bryntesson took the win with Lites series leader Kevin Hansen placing second.  Kevin Eriksson was third in Hell and remains third in the overall standings.

Martin Anayi, World RX Managing Director for IMG, concluded: “It’s been a sensational weekend in Hell: we’ve had a record crowd, fantastic weather and action-packed racing. The Hell RX organisers have worked exceptionally hard to deliver a top-notch event this year and their efforts have successfully helped grow spectator numbers to just shy of 20,000 people.  We witnessed four different manufacturers – Peugeot, Ford, Volkswagen, Audi – in the final and the fight for the Teams’ Championship is definitely heating up with Team Peugeot-Hansen now leading the charge over Ford Olsbergs MSE.  Timmy [Hansen] looked unstoppable this weekend but Solberg continues to lead the standings by 41 points.  With five rounds still remaining, however, both the Drivers’ and the Teams’ Championship are all to play for.”

Round nine of the Championship, the Bretagne World RX of France, is next in the 13-round World RX calendar and will take place in just under two weeks time (5-6 September).

Sweden’s Timmy Hansen won the Bretagne World RX of France in style by triumphing at the ninth round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy at home for Peugeot.  It is the second event in a row that Hansen has won in his Peugeot 208 WRX Supercar and the result sees the squad extend its lead at the top of the Teams’ Championship. Points leader Petter Solberg clinched the runner-up spot while Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Dubourg finished third in front of an elated home crowd.

A record crowd of 75,000 fans attended this weekend’s Loheac RX as Hansen took top qualifier for the third event in a row and scooped the maximum 16 points available at Intermediate Classification. Solberg continues to lead the World RX Drivers’ Championship, 37 points ahead of Hansen. Third in the overall standings is Team Volkswagen Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson, who finished fourth this weekend after another impressive drive in his VW Polo RX Supercar.

“If there is one place I wanted to win it’s Loheac – the home of Peugeot,” said race winner Hansen, who also wins the Monster Energy Super Charge Award for beating the other drivers to the first corner of today’s final.  “It feels so good to take this win – the fans have given me so much support this weekend and it’s amazing to be able to give something back to them.  The heats were tough – we had a strategy to save the tyres for the semi-finals and it felt so good to get through all four heats with the maximum 16 points and pole position. I pushed in the semi-finals with the new tyres. For the final, I had six clear laps and the team pushed me so hard on the radio, which kept me going right to the end.  This victory is for all the supporters this weekend and to everyone who believed in Team Peugeot-Hansen.”

Solberg was pleased with second place as the Norwegian explained he had a clear strategy going into the weekend: “We had a plan this weekend to get as many points as possible during the heats – this is why we changed tyres for the third heat and didn’t save them for the semis,” explained the SDRX driver. “We’ve worked out that we need an average of 21 points at each race to keep ahead in the standings and this has been my focus.  We’ve had some problems such as the gearbox on day one but I’m very happy with our performance and second place is brilliant for the Championship.  Timmy was fast in the final - I knew it would be hard to catch him on new tyres but I want to say that I’m very impressed with Jean-Baptiste [Dubourg] – he is a proper talent and should be in the World Championship next year for sure.”

Euro RX front-runner Dubourg finished third driving his fellow countryman Davy Jeanney’s former Citroen C4 RX Supercar. He said: “This is a dream come true and a gift before Christmas.  The semi-final was always the goal but when I made it to the final, I thought to myself that anything could happen and that I might be in with a chance of top three. A podium in an FIA World Championship – wow! It is just unbelievable.  I’m going to enjoy celebrating with my team tonight, this victory is for them – I want to thank them for everything.”

Rounding out the top five at Loheac RX was two-time DTM Champion Mattias Ekstrom who had a good run of form in his Audi S1 EKS RX quattro. Ekstrom, whose team-mate Anton Marklund made the semi-finals for the second event in a row, was knocked out of podium contention when he spun on turn one of the final and broke his car's driveshaft.  Robin Larsson was sixth, the Swede failing to finish the final after suspected gearbox problems in his Audi A1 Supercar.

Elsewhere, it was a tough weekend for Solberg’s team-mate Liam Doran who showed good pace in his Citroen DS3 RX Supercar but was deprived a semi-final position after breaking his car’s suspension in two of the heats. “My luck has got to change at some point – we’ve proved we’ve got the pace,” explained the Englishman.  “The car is working well enough. We’ve got four chances left so we need to keep trying.”

In the Super1600 category, where there was a total of 30 cars entered, it was Denmark’s Ulrik Linnemann who took the overall victory and also his second win of the season. Frenchman Andrea Dubourg finished second much to the delight of the home crowd, while Russia’s Timur Shigabutdinov secured the third podium spot.  Linnemann’s win this weekend sees the Dane catapulted to second in the S1600 driver standings – nine points adrift of series leader, Janis Baumanis. There are just two rounds remaining in this year’s S1600 category: Barcelona and Italy.

Paul Bellamy, World RX Managing Director for IMG, commented: “Once again Loheac has delivered a phenomenal event and I would like to congratulate the organisers for their tremendous efforts in making this year’s Loheac RX more popular than ever before with attendance figures reaching a staggering 75,000.  There’s no denying that Loheac RX deserves a spot on the World RX calendar with its sell-out crowd and fantastic race action. Congratulations to Timmy who took the victory, he drove a mature race and thoroughly deserves his second win of the season for Peugeot. It was also great to see a Frenchman in today’s final - the atmosphere was palpable as Jean-Baptiste received a standing ovation from the fans for his podium position. Now it’s onto Barcelona where the season is expected to reach fever pitch as the drivers scramble for crucial points in this year’s Drivers’ and Teams’ Championship."

The inaugural World RX of Barcelona which will be staged at the famous F1 circuit from 18-20 September. World RX, Euro RX, S1600 and the supporting RX Lites Cup will battle it out at the tenth round of the Championship.

BARCELONA RX : ANALISIS DE LA PISTA

BARCELONA RX: TRACK ANALYSIS

Final preparations of the brand new rallycross circuit at the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona in Barcelona are taking place ahead of the arrival of the FIA World Rallycross Championship next week.

A short test was run on the new RX track at the Formula One and Moto GP venue at the end of August, where cross cars and a rally car were used in a session that was set up to trial the new unsealed surfaces. The track is unusual in featuring an uphill start that leads to the first corner, a left-hand turn that is more usually seen as the right-handed penultimate corner of the Moto GP lap.

The asphalt sections are wide, smooth and fast. The first of the two unsealed areas has an intricate entry before running through a fast downhill right kink. An uphill run on the race track leads to the second unsealed area, which comprises of a long right and a kink to the left before dropping back to a downhill last corner created within the F1 track. The chicane that forms the penultimate corner of the F1 circuit is used to provide a Joker Lap that runs parallel to the last corner, the finish line on the uphill run back towards the first corner.

Spectators at the tenth round of World RX will have an incredible view the action in the stadium arena section of the famous venue. Alongside the World RX teams and drivers, Euro RX will also feature in Spain, along with the Super1600 and RX Lites support categories.

SOLBERG WINS #BARCELONARX

Norway’s Petter Solberg has secured his third victory in the 2015 FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy after winning the inaugural Barcelona RX.  Team Volkswagen Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson finished runner-up, while Team Peugeot-Hansen’s Timmy Hansen secured the final spot on the podium.  Solberg continues to lead the overall Championship drivers’ standings but Hansen’s maximum points haul at Intermediate Classification stage sees the gap reduced to 35 points with three rounds remaining.

Barcelona RX also marked the penultimate round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship where Team Volkswagen Sweden’s Ole Christian Veiby took the overall victory, while Alexander Hvaal finished runner-up in his Citroen DS3. Finland’s Joni-Pekka Rajala claimed third. Tommy Rustad won on the road in his Marklund Motorsport prepared Polo RX Supercar but was excluded after post-race scrutineering where the car was found in breach of the regulations concerning driver aids.

“The whole weekend we have been fighting so hard, my mechanics have been flat out trying lots of different set-ups on the car so it’s fantastic to be able to be on the podium again,” explained Barcelona RX winner Solberg. “The Peugeots were fast again this weekend and we had some troubles in heat three when I got caught in dust and clipped a bale.  I started on the second row in the semi-final and was happy to get second but I wasn’t totally pleased with the car so we made some more set-up changes for the final.  I had a really good start from the second row and managed to get ahead.  I made a small mistake on the gravel, it was really slippery, but I saw the guys behind me also lost some time so I just kept going and managed to keep ahead.  This win means even more today because my son Oliver also won in crosskart back in Sweden – I spoke to him before the final and he was teasing me telling me I had to win because he did.  I think it worked!”

Kristoffersson – who posted the fastest lap time of the weekend in his Polo RX Supercar – was also delighted to return to the World RX podium.  “It feels great to be back in the end of event press conference,” explained the round one winner. “We’ve found a lot of speed this weekend and I had four new tyres for the semi-finals which definitely helped me push ahead of the others.  During the final, I had a better launch than Timmy off the front line but Petter managed to get round the side and so I decided to take the Joker in the first lap.  I want to take a moment to thank my team – they’ve done a fantastic job with the car, it’s been working great and I’ve loved driving it this weekend.”

Hansen’s third place saw Team Peugeot-Hansen score their sixth podium in a row.  The 22-year-old Swede was also awarded the Monster Energy Super Charge Award after beating the other five drivers to the first corner, before Solberg managed to move ahead.  “I’ve had such a fast car this weekend, it has been so good once again. I was even surprised at some of my times, I didn’t think I had been going that quick but the lap times were really good,” explained Hansen. “My confidence grew when I got pole position but Petter got ahead and then I made a few small mistakes on the dirt after it had been watered which cost me some time.  My team were pushing me hard on the radio, and I tried as hard as I could.”

Team-mate Davy Jeanney had a strong outing in the team’s second Peugeot-Hansen and finished fourth overall.  Jeanney and Hansen’s third and fourth place position sees Team Peugeot-Hansen extend its lead over Ford Olsbergs MSE in the Teams’ Championship by 77 points.

American Tanner Foust rounded out the top five after an impressive drive in a Marklund Motorsport Polo RX Supercar. Robin Larsson finished sixth, the driver retiring from the first lap of today’s final.

The FIA European Rallycross Championship for Super1600 and the RX Lites Cup also supported the tenth round of the World RX in Barcelona.  In S1600, it was Frenchman Andrea Dubourg who took the overall win. Following a stewards’ inquiry, Dubourg was given a penalty of eight Championship points for technical infringements but kept his victory. Hungary’s Krisztian Szabo took second place, while Janis Baumanis kept his hopes of the S1600 Championship title alive by clinching third place.  With just one S1600 round remaining, Baumanis leads Szabo by 26 points in the standings.

Thomas Bryntesson proved dominant in the RX Lites Cup over the weekend with the Norwegian taking three heat wins and the overall victory. Frenchman Cyril Raymond and Sweden’s Kevin Hansen were second and third respectively. With two rounds of RX Lites remaining, Hansen leads Kevin Eriksson by nine points.

World RX Managing Director for IMG, Paul Bellamy, concluded: “Rallycross last visited Spain back in the 1980s and it’s been fantastic to witness the sport returning to a country which has such a rich heritage in motorsport.  The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya also marks the first time that World RX has competed on a current Formula One and MotoGP racetrack and with spectator figures of more than 25,000 people it’s certainly been a weekend to remember.  The organisers have done a terrific job: they have built a circuit which the drivers and teams have been very complimentary about. Finally, I’d like to congratulate Petter on taking the overall win – his rapid start on the final was exemplary. Congratulations also to Ole-Christian for taking the Euro RX victory.”

Round 11 of the FIA World Rallycross Championship will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, in two weeks as World RX returns to Asia.

XD

GIGI GALLI AND KIA RIO ENTER WORLD RX

The FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy is delighted to welcome former WRC driver Gigi Galli and Kia Rio to World RX. Both Galli and the all-new Kia Rio Supercar will compete at the upcoming World RX of Italy (16-18 October).

The successful rally driver from Livigno, who competed in last year’s World RX of Italy, has decided to take one step further in 2015 and compete in a new car. Galli – who narrowly missed out on a spot in last year’s Italy RX final – has created his own RX team starting the project with a brand new Kia Rio Supercar, the first of its kind in rallycross.

Less than 12 months after his first World RX experience, Galli is now ready for his new adventure thanks to the support of his Italian partners. Giovanni Bernacchini, Galli’s co-driver from his rallying days, will join Galli as a key member of his new team.

“I am delighted to be back in World RX,” explained Galli, who competed in a total of 66 WRC events and scored two podiums. “My supporters have been pushing for this to happen and my endless passion for racing has made this happen. I am especially excited about creating a brand new team and car plus I am excited to also have Giovanni [Bernacchini] by my side. We will introduce ourselves at the Italian World RX round at Franciacorta next month. Our aim is not to win, it would be foolish to think we could do that straightaway – we simply want to demonstrate how hard we have worked so far.”

HANSEN WINS TURKEY RX AND CLOSES ON SOLBERG'S LEAD

Timmy Hansen has continued his run of good form in the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy after winning this weekend’s Intercity World RX of Turkey.  It is the seventh consecutive event that Team Peugeot-Hansen has finished on the podium.  Ford Olsbergs MSE driver Andreas Bakkerud took the runner-up spot and third place was taken by Team Volkswagen Sweden driver Johan Kristoffersson.

This weekend’s result sees Hansen close the gap on Championship leader Petter Solberg - Hansen is now 19 points adrift of Solberg in the overall drivers’ standings with two rounds still remaining.  “We lost too many points this weekend which isn’t so good for the Championship, now the pressure is really on for Italy,” explained Solberg.  The Norwegian failed to make today’s final after he broke his car’s driveshaft in the first semi-final and nursed his Citroen DS3 Supercar to the finish.

“My semi-final was the craziest and most fun race I have had, I have never had to fight so much for a win,” grinned Turkey RX winner Hansen, who was also awarded the Monster Energy Super Charge Award for being the first driver to reach turn one in the final. “Our start was not so good in the semi-final and there was a lot of chaos with so many close battles going on.  I was so happy to come out top.  Then the final, wow! I got a great start and then kept pushing until the very end when I did the Joker and just managed to stay ahead of Andreas [Bakkerud].  I actually can’t believe I won today and all I have left to say is that rallycross is the most exciting sport in the world!”

Bakkuerud – who won last year’s Turkey RX – was just three hundredths of a second behind event winner Hansen. The Norwegian explained: “It’s really great to be back on the podium but it’s hard to be second when you’re so close to the win.  The team have worked so hard and it’s nice to be able to give something back to them.  Reinis should be here with me. It was a great battle and unfortunately he lost out.”

Fresh from second place at the recent Barcelona RX, Kristoffersson was full of confidence going to Istanbul and qualified sixth at the Intermediate Classification.  The Swede managed to keep his nose clean in the first semi-final to finish third and secure a spot in the final where he started on the third row.  Kristoffersson made contact with EKS driver Anton Marklund in the first lap – which led to Marklund’s retirement when smoke filled his car – but Kristoffersson continued. He commented: “As Timmy said, our semi-final was chaos but I managed to make it through to the final and then I had one of the best starts I’ve had all season.  There was so much traffic in turn one so I lost some time and slotted in behind some of the others.  After my contact with Anton in turn three, I just tried to focus on the track and do my own thing. I’m really happy with P3."

EKS driver Mattias Ekstrom was top qualifier at the end of today’s four heats and scored the maximum 16 points available.  The two-time DTM Champion made contact with his team-mate Anton Marklund during the final, however, and ended up fourth, with Marklund sixth.

Fifth overall was Frenchman Davy Jeanney who had another solid run in his Peugeot 208 WRX Supercar to help Team Peugeot-Hansen further extend its lead in the overall Teams’ Championship.

Swedish driver Robin Larsson was on course for a spot in today’s final but spun his car in the final lap of the second semi-final, costing him a top three spot.  It was a similar story for Ford Olsbergs MSE driver Reinis Nitiss who was leading for the majority of his semi-final until a gearbox problem slowed his progress.

Turkey RX also formed the penultimate round of the RX Lites Cup which saw Norway’s Thomas Bryntesson secure his fourth event win in a row.  Sweden’s Kevin Hansen – younger brother of Timmy – was second overall, the driver extending his lead over Kevin Eriksson in the overall standings with just one round remaining.

Arguably the most impressive drive of the weekend, however, was that of Britain’s Tom Onslow-Cole who finished third in the RX Lites Cup on his rallycross debut.  Onslow-Cole – who earned the drive in Turkey RX by winning the RX Talent Search at Lydden Hill back in May – showed good pace and race-craft throughout the weekend.

“I’ve absolutely loved getting to grips with rallycross this weekend and it’s definitely made me hungry for more,” smiled the British GT racer. “I’m used to endurance racing and rallycross is a totally different ballgame – even though the races are shorter, it’s equally as exhausting! I’d love to come back to the rallycross paddock again soon and hopefully this isn’t the last you will see of me.”

World RX Managing Director for IMG, Paul Bellamy, concluded: “It’s great to return to Asia and to another F1 venue which has been well adapted to suit rallycross.  Timmy did an excellent job once again, managing to close the gap on Petter in the Drivers’ Championship – with only two rounds remaining and a total of 60 points still available, it’s all to play for in Italy and Argentina.  Today’s racing was real nail-biting stuff and made fantastic entertainment not just for the spectators but for our broadcasters around the world too.  Once again we had four different manufacturers in the final which just goes to show the great diversity within our Championship.  I’d like to thank the Turkish organisers for putting on a fantastic race weekend and we look forward to returning to Franciacorta where the Championship is set to reach fever pitch.”

The penultimate round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship will be staged in Franciacorta, Italy, from 16-18 October.  It will form the final round of Euro RX, RX Lites and Super1600.

PETTER SOLBERG MAKES IT TWO WORLD RX TITLES IN A ROW

PETTER SOLBERG GANA SU SEGUNDO MUNDIAL SEGUIDO

Norway’s Petter Solberg has won the FIA World Rallycross Championship for the second year in a row by qualifying for the semi-finals at the final round of the championship in Argentina.

Ahead of the semi-finals and final this afternoon, Solberg is fourth overall, behind top Intermediate Classification qualifier Andreas Bakkerud, Timmy Hansen and Robin Larsson. “I’m not totally ready to celebrate because I want to drive the semi-final and final and try to win the event here. It’s unbelievable to win another championship, but all I’m thinking about now is the semi-final and trying to win,” said Solberg.

Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom will start on the second row of the grid in semi-final one, alongside RX Lites Cup champion Kevin Hansen. Ole-Christian Veiby - standing in for Tord Linnered - will also start in semi-final one, with Marklund Motorsport’s Toomas Heikkinen.

The two title rivals heading into Argentina, Solberg and Timmy Hansen will start next to each other on the front row of the second semi-final, with Latvia’s Janis Baumanis, France’s Davy Jeanney, Sweden’s Anton Marklund and Austria’s Manfred Stohl completing the semi-final line-up.

VOLKSWAGEN RX SWEDEN LAUNCHED IN STOCKHOLM

A new Volkswagen RX Sweden Team will compete in the 2016 FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy. Marklund Motorsport and Volkswagen Team Sweden have joined forces to create the all-new team and signed drivers Johan Kristoffersson and Anton Marklund to pilot a pair of Volkswagen Polo RX Supercars.

The announcement, which was made at a press conference in Stockholm this morning, is in collaboration with Volkswagen Sweden. Marklund Motorsport finished second in both the drivers’ championship and the teams’ championship in 2014, while Johan Kristofferson of Volkswagen Team Sweden finished third in the overall driver standings this year.

Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director at Volkswagen Motorsport explained the process behind the merger: "Volkswagen Motorsport is positive about the merger that came about as a result of the team's initiative. A collaboration between Marklund Motorsport and Volkswagen Team Sweden will strengthen Volkswagen's position in one of the fastest growing areas of motorsport. Combining our capabilities will create good possibilities for further success in the sport.”

Sten Forsberg, head of Volkswagen Sweden, also welcomed the joint venture. "The competitive situation in World RX calls for creative solutions to achieve success for both Marklund Motorsport and Volkswagen Team Sweden, which we as collaborative partners strive for. With our joint effort, we are convinced that the team with Johan Kristoffersson and Anton Marklund as drivers will be able to keep up with the pack and be fighting for the championship," he said.

Team bosses Jan Marklund and Tommy Kristoffersson also back the new collaboration. "We already discussed a merger last year, but we never got around to it,” explained Marklund, father of Anton. “Now we will be added to the mix of Volkswagen's involvement and our joint goal for 2016 is very clear.”

Marklund revealed that the new team will invest a lot of resources in testing. "We will have a separate test unit with a racing car, staff and trailer that will manage our development activities. The competition in World RX is becoming increasingly tough and to be in with a chance of winning the championship, we need to constantly improve and optimise the equipment."

Tommy Kristoffersson added: "Pooling our resources enables us to provide the stable platform of infrastructure and competence that is required for professional, long-term involvement. The merger gives us good sporting chances, and on a personal note, I am really looking forward to working with our drivers, engineers and mechanics and collaborating to form and develop the team. Ambition, passion and teamwork are the keywords.”

Tommy Kristoffersson – father of Johan - will be the general manager of the new team and Michael Schneider has been appointed team manager after having performed the same role at Marklund Motorsport in 2015.

The team's new cars will be built at Marklund Motorsport's premises in Boliden. As the season gets closer, the work will be relocated to Arvika, where Volkswagen Team Sweden is based.

Ken Block commits to World Rallycross Championship for 2016

Ken Block will contest the full 2016 World Rallycross Championship at the wheel of a factory Ford Fiesta ST.

The American has set aside all his other motorsport commitments to focus on landing the FIA title.

"I've never really had the time or the budget to focus on one championship," Block told Autosport. "So to be able to do this with Ford is just the best news for me.

"It really means a lot to be competing for an FIA world title, there's a lot of prestige in there and accomplishing something like that would be huge for me."

Block said Ford had significantly increased its involvement in his programme.

"When I switched from Subaru six years ago, Ford was a sponsor. They gave me some money and told me to go and do what I wanted to do, but this year it's different," he said.

"This time we're getting so much more technical support - they're really working alongside us on this one."

Block's Fiesta will still be prepared by M-Sport and run by his own Hoonigan Racing Division.

He has competed in World RX before, finishing third on his series debut in Norway in 2014.

"There's a lot of competition in World RX," said Block, "and obviously Petter [Solberg] is the guy with the most success.

"I know Petter really well, we come from a similar background of rallying and I'm really looking forward to taking him and the rest of those guys on."

Block's World RX deal is understood to be a multi-year agreement, which means he is unlikely to be seen in rallying in the near future.

"There's not the budget to do stage rallying as well as this," said Block.

"I'll certainly come back to it in the future, but for now I'm stoked to have Ford with me for World Rallycross."

Block will still continue his video work, with his latest Ford Escort Mk II likely to feature in the latest Gymkhana film later this season.

AUTOSPORT SAYS...
David Evans, rallies editor
@davidevansrally

It's impossible not to be enthused by Ken Block. Even with the remnants of a cold hanging over him, the excitement at the start of a new season resonates down the telephone.

And, much as I, the World Rally Championship and Rally America will miss KB this season, it's good for him to get the chance to prove what he can do over the stretch of an FIA-sanctioned season.

Block's love of rallying is well documented, but the cut and thrust of World RX is a good fit. And it's clearly a discipline he's suited to, winning three Global Rallycross rounds last season and showing well on his World RX debut two years ago.

The WRC should watch and learn this year as World RX will, no doubt, make the most out of its new partnership with Block and with Ford.

The American's social media status is second to none in motorsport, and that medium remains an area of significant weakness for the WRC.

It would have been nice to see Ken in a rally car again this year, but the chance to see him aiming 550bhp at the apex of Lydden's Devil's Elbow is, I suppose, not a bad second best.
