LMS - Class win for Beechdean Mansell
In only their third race the Beechdean Mansell Motorsport team took the chequered flag to record their first Le Mans Series class win at the 1000km of the Hungaroring in Hungary. Leo and Greg Mansell shared the driving duties in the six hour race on the tight and twisty 3.7km track and it was older brother Leo who took the chequered flag, winning LMP1 and finishing seventh overall, after a gruelling race that saw many of their rivals fall by the wayside.

The Ginetta Zytek GZ09S ran consistently, and almost faultlessly, in the hands on the two Mansell brothers and father Nigel, who was taking a break from driving after his Le Mans accident, was on hand to celebrate with his boys and the rest of the Beechdean Mansell Motorsport team.

Greg Mansell took the first two hour stint behind the wheel and for the first hour was running in the top five until contact with another car caused some bodywork damage to the Ginetta Zytek. Greg continued but dropped back to 7th due to high tyre pressures before pitting on lap 32. A very quick pitstop for new Dunlop tyres was undone when a puncture forced him back in a few laps later for a replacement.

After two hours Greg handed the car over to Leo, who rejoined the track in 8th place and just before the first safety car period of the race to recover the stricken GT1 class Saleen. When racing went green again Leo Mansell and the Ginetta Zytek continued to set consistent lap times despite the very hot Hungarian weather, but the same couldn’t be said for their LMP1 rivals as the Oreca Peugeot, the Signature Lola and both the Rebellion Racing Lola’s all suffered mechanical problems.  A Stop-Go penalty just before his scheduled stop didn’t upset the older Mansell brother’s rhythm and he handed over to Greg in 4th place, with one hour and forty minutes of the race remaining.

Greg Mansell took the driving duties for the next hour of the race and, despite a report that the car was dropping some oil, the Ginetta Zytek continued to lap the 3.7km track consistently in the hands of the younger Mansell. Greg pulled the team back up to 6th before coming in to hand over to Leo for the final 30-minutes of the race. The stop was longer than before when the team had to carry out some bodywork repairs to the front of the car but Leo was soon back on track, running in 7th overall and six laps ahead of the nearest LMP1 runner, the #12 Rebellion Racing Lola of Nicolas Prost and Neel Jani.

Leo Mansell kept the Ginetta Zytek on the track and took the chequered flag to the jubilation of the rest of the team.

Leo Mansell

"It's unbelievable. I think it is still sinking in, but we set our stall out at the beginning of the weekend to finish the race, to have as few problems as possible and to get to the finish. We knew this race was going to be a battle of attrition for everyone, especially the LMP1 cars around here. It's an unbelievable result for the team who did an amazing job with the car and Dunlop have done a great job with the tyres.

"I was surprised that the other LMP1 cars had as many problems as they did but the nature of the track made it absolute carnage out there with the GTs and the Formula Le Mans cars, which made it a massive challenge every lap. There is a massive gain-reward around here if you are willing to take chances, but we decided to only be aggressive where we knew we had a good chance of getting by without getting any damage, which paid dividends at the end of the race. It is fantastic to have a win as we head to Silverstone for our home race as a family team and this is an unbelievable feeling that will take a couple of days to sink in properly."

Greg Mansell

"We really needed this result and we are all very happy. At the start we had a miscalculation on the pressure of the tyres, with the heat on the grid they didn't go down as much as we thought and the pressures skyrocketed, which made the first set of tyres undriveable. So we shortened the first stint and the second set of tyres were immediately there but we got a puncture so we had to come back in. As the sun went down the car just got better and better.

"It was a very hard race, it was the longest and hardest time I've ever had in my career. It's the same as doing three World Series races back to back and the race pace is probably the same. Hats off to Leo, he did an absolute awesome job; the pressure was on him when I handed him the car in P1 with 35-minutes to go and he brought the car home, so we're all very happy. We know that with this type of racing, it's not over until it's over and you've just got to work really hard and keep the car progressing. The diesels are beatable, they are vulnerable to certain tracks, and we're heading to Silverstone in a very positive mood and looking forward to racing in front of the British fans."

Nigel Mansell

"A fantastic team effort; the team and the boys worked very, very hard but the greatest credit must go to Leo and Greg, they drove superbly all day. It wasn't difficult for me to sit out this race because I helped run the car, helped with the strategy, talking to the boys virtually every lap, so I was in the car with them all the way. We head to Silverstone on a high but we're also realistic. We still haven't got a major sponsor but today has shown what a small team run properly can do and it is great credit to Beechdean. This victory is for everybody but I'm also delighted that the driving credit goes to Leo and Greg, they deserve it. It's their first win and is the first as a family, which is a little bit of history that nobody can take away. To beat the Peugeot and the Lolas was truly magnificent, a win is a win and it is truly fantastic."

Andrew Howard, team principal

“This is fantastic; to win in only our third race is an excellent achievement for such a young team at this level. Greg and Leo did a brilliant job in very difficult conditions and the car ran almost faultlessly for the entire six hour race, which is a testament to all the hard work put in by everyone in the team. Of course this puts us in a great position for our home race at Silverstone next month and we are going to enjoy ourselves.”

que carrera más rara, el primer LMP1 fue septimo  y seis LMP2 delante,   este campeonato esta muy flojo,
las ALMS son mucho mejor :primero:  sin quitarle merito a los equipos que compiten en las LMS
